Hope Cove Beaches: Which One Suits Your Day?

Hope Cove is one of those places where a beach day can be as easy as picking up a towel and walking down to the water.

What first-time visitors do not always realise is that Hope Cove has two sandy beaches. They sit close together, but each has a slightly different feel.

Harbour Beach is in Inner Hope, beside the old harbour. Mouthwell Sands is in Outer Hope and is often the busier choice for a traditional family beach day.

So which one should you choose? Honestly, you can enjoy both. But here is what is useful to know.

Harbour Beach: Quieter and More Sheltered

Harbour Beach has a tucked-away feel, protected by the harbour wall and surrounded by the older part of the village.

It is a lovely choice for a gentle paddle, a quieter hour on the sand or the first walk down to the sea after you arrive. The beach is also good for rock-pooling and relaxed family time when conditions suit.

For guests staying at 1 Alberni Cottage, this is the easiest beach to reach. The cottage’s back gate opens onto a track leading down towards Harbour Beach, so it is simple to pop back if someone needs a dry towel, a snack or a break from the sun.

Dogs are currently welcome on Harbour Beach throughout the year, but they need to remain on a lead. Always check the signs at the beach entrance in case local rules have changed.

Harbour Beach is best for:

– a quieter beach visit
– early morning or evening walks
– guests staying in Inner Hope
– families who value being able to come and go easily
– dog owners visiting with their dog on a lead

Mouthwell Sands: A More Traditional Beach Day

Mouthwell Sands is the sandy beach in Outer Hope. It is popular with families and has a mix of open sand and rocky areas for exploring.

This is probably the better choice if everyone wants to settle in for a longer beach day, build sandcastles or spend time swimming when the sea conditions are suitable. Seasonal RNLI lifeguard cover may operate here, but check the current dates before relying on it and always follow the beach flags.

The main village car park is close to Mouthwell Sands, although spaces are limited and Hope Cove gets very busy during warm weather and school holidays. Arriving earlier in the day usually makes everything easier.

Dogs are not permitted on Mouthwell Sands between 1 May and 30 September inclusive. Outside those dates, check the current signs when you arrive.

Mouthwell Sands is best for:

– a classic family beach day
– sandcastles and rock-pooling
– swimming when conditions are suitable
– visitors using the main Hope Cove car park
– being close to refreshments and village facilities

What Facilities Are Nearby?

One of the reasons Hope Cove works so well for an easy beach day is that the village facilities are close by.

There are public toilets, places to eat and drink, and somewhere to pick up refreshments and basic beach essentials. Opening hours can be seasonal, so it is worth checking ahead if you are visiting outside the main summer period.

Hope Cove is reached along narrow South Devon roads, so allow a little extra time and take care when meeting oncoming traffic. During the busiest summer days, getting there early is my best advice.

Add a Coast Path Walk

The beach does not have to be the whole day.

Hope Cove sits on the South West Coast Path, with lovely walking in both directions. You can head towards South Milton Sands and Thurlestone or climb towards Bolt Tail and Bolberry Down for wider coastal views.

The paths can be steep, muddy or exposed in places, depending on the route and weather. Wear sensible shoes, keep children and dogs close by when near cliff edges and check conditions before setting off.

Even a short climb out of the village gives you a different view over the two beaches and the coastline beyond.
