Special Occasion Dining Near Salcombe and Kingsbridge | Quay Holiday Lettings

A special meal does not always need to be very formal.

Sometimes it is a tasting menu and an evening you have planned well in advance. Sometimes it is seafood beside the water, lunch that stretches into the afternoon or having somebody cook for you at the cottage so no one needs to drive home.

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or simply having a night away together, these are some of the places I would consider around Salcombe, Hope Cove and Kingsbridge.

They all offer something slightly different, which is really the point. The right choice depends on the sort of occasion you want.

Verse, Kingsbridge: For a More Intimate Food Experience

Verse is tucked away in Kingsbridge and feels a little different from the area’s more familiar waterside restaurants.

The main dining experience is built around a seasonal menu designed to unfold over the evening, making it a good choice when the meal itself is the occasion. There is also a more informal chefs table for smaller plates and a less structured evening.

I would consider Verse for a couple celebrating an anniversary, a proper date night or guests who really enjoy thoughtful food and want to try somewhere beyond Salcombe.

Verse currently opens for evening service on selected days, so this is one to plan and book ahead rather than leave until the last minute.

Best for: tasting-menu dining, anniversaries and a quieter evening centred around the food.

The Jetty at Salcombe Harbour Hotel: For the Estuary View

For a special meal in the middle of Salcombe, The Jetty at Salcombe Harbour Hotel has panoramic views across the estuary.

The restaurant serves seafood and British seaside dishes in a smart but relaxed setting. You can have dinner, afternoon tea or simply start with a drink while watching the boats on the water.

It works particularly well if you want the evening to feel special without travelling out of town. Guests staying at Ginn Cottage, Salcombe Hideaway or Kennford can enjoy Salcombe beforehand, then settle in for dinner with the view.

Best for: estuary views, seafood, birthdays and a polished Salcombe evening.

South Sands: For a Relaxed Coastal Occasion

South Sands is one of my favourite Salcombe beaches, and there are two good dining options if you want the setting to be part of the occasion.

Seagrass Salcombe

The restaurant at South Sands Hotel is now called Seagrass Salcombe. It sits right by the beach, with open views across the water and a relaxed approach that still feels lovely for a celebration.

This is the choice for a long lunch, afternoon tea or dinner that feels coastal rather than formal. In summer, the terrace has the energy of the beach around it; in cooler weather, you can eat inside and stay for a drink by the fire.

Harbour Beach Club

Harbour Beach Club has a more polished beach-club atmosphere, with a beachfront restaurant and terrace. It can work particularly well if you want to combine lunch or dinner with a spa treatment or a slower day beside the beach.

Parking at South Sands is not straightforward, especially in summer. Plan the journey before booking depending on the season, the ferry from Salcombe, a taxi or arranging a drop-off may feel much easier than driving.

Best for: relaxed celebrations, beachside lunch, spa days and occasions where the setting matters as much as the meal.

The Lobster Pod, Hope Cove: For Something Quirky by the Harbour

The Lobster Pod Bistro is a lovely Hope Cove option when you want something memorable but not overly formal.

Its bookable dining pods overlook the harbour and beach, creating a more private little space for couples, families or friends. The food has a coastal focus, including local seafood and lobster, alongside other choices.

There are only a small number of pods and they are booked online, so reserve early if the pod itself is important to the occasion. Other tables may operate on a first-come basis. The bistro is seasonal, so check that it is open before making it part of your plans.

This one pairs particularly well with a stay at 1 Alberni Cottage. You can enjoy Hope Cove without worrying about a long journey back afterwards.

Best for: a relaxed birthday, family celebration or quirky Hope Cove date night.

Or Bring the Restaurant to Your Cottage

For some celebrations, the nicest option is staying in.

A private chef means you can enjoy a proper meal without choosing a designated driver, organising taxis or asking everyone to leave the cottage just as they have started to relax. It can work especially well for a proposal weekend, anniversary, birthday or a small group staying together.

Local options to consider include:

Coastal Chef: Jane offers private dining in homes and holiday properties across South Devon, including Salcombe. She plans the menu with guests, then cooks, serves and clears up. Find out more at https://www.coastal-chef.co.uk/.

Twenty Seven by Jamie Rogers: Jamie offers private-chef experiences enquire through the website

Feast Kitchen Deli: Based in Malborough, Feast offers private dining and event catering with menus tailored to the occasion and budget. Find out more at https://www.feastkitchendeli.co.uk/

Paul Hegley from Verse: Paul is available for private-chef and catering events, with enquiries made through https://www.versekingsbridge.com/

Availability, group sizes, menus, dietary requirements and the kitchens they can work in will vary. Contact the chef well ahead of the stay and share the property details before confirming anything.

Best for: intimate celebrations, groups, proposal weekends and an evening where nobody wants to drive.

My Advice: Book Earlier Than You Think

The South Hams is busy during school holidays and summer weekends, but the choice of restaurants is still relatively small. Special-occasion tables and private chefs can book up quickly.

Once you know your dates, make the dinner reservation early. Check the cancellation policy, arrange transport and mention dietary requirements when booking.

Then you can relax and enjoy the evening, which is what it is meant to be about.

If you are staying with Quay Holiday Lettings and need help working out which area or option suits your plans, just ask. I am always happy to point guests in the right direction.
